Application Messaging

PeopleSoft Application Messaging manages data exchange among applications through a collection of middleware services, web servlets, and PeopleTools database objects.  These elements work together to generate message instances and the appropriate publication or subscription contracts.

Application Engine

The PeopleCode function Call Application Engine – CallAppEngine() is used when calling the application engine from online PeopleCode.  The syntax is CallAppEngine("<App Engine>",<State Record>,<Process Instance>).


Ascential provides a suite of products that are used for the purposes of designing and executing data extract, tramsformation and loading from and between external data sources and PeopleSoft products.  EPM utilises Ascential and PeopleSoft provided ETL templates to populate OWS,OWE and MDW data warehouse layers.

Batch jobs provide a means of categorising and grouping processes together in PeopleSoft and are executed on the Process Scheduler.  These are often executed out-of-hours and are used to update and integrate modular transactions and consolidations such as GL with subsystem transactions.

Change Assistant

Change Assistant is a tool that enables you to assemble and organize the steps necessary to apply patches and fixes for your PeopleTools maintenance updates. Change Assistant also helps automate the application of change packages to ensure your systems have the latest maintenance software.


COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) is a progamming language still used by PeopleSoft for batch processes.  Many processes written in COBOL are being replaced by PeopleTools programs such as Application Engine.

SQL statements in PeopleSoft COBOL programs are executed through PTPSQLRT module.  
SQL statements for COBOL programs are located in PS_SQLSTMT_TBL.

The most common issue with PeopleSoft COBOL program abends is the mismatch of the SQL statement with the structure of the statement held in the COBOL program.

Excel to CI

Excel to CI is a tool meant to replace Import Manager; it enables you upload data from Microsoft Excel into PeopleSoft.  The Excel workbooks consist of templates for specific component interfaces that execute business logic (ie value edits/validations) while loading the data.

IPC Resources

$PS_HOME\appserv\ is used to free up abandoned IPC resources.  If you have a partially started domain or if you have to manually kill a Tuxedo domain or process, you may have abandoned IPC resources that will need to be released.  Running this scripts will allow you to free up all IPC resources that were allocated to a particular UNIX ID/group ID combination.
